Be The Change

by Dave Owen on June 7, 2009

Gandhi suggests that we “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

Wayne Dyer suggests that “You do not attract into your life what you want, you attract what you are”.

A lot of people ask how they can find happiness. But, as these two quotes suggest, we cannot find or receive what do not put out into the world.

“What goes round comes round” is something that I have heard most of my life. What this means to me is that what I do and how I act will come back to either haunt me or enhance me. If I put out garbage, I will get garbage back. The reverse of the computer term of “garbage in, garbage out”.

Life is too short to be searching for the “things” that will make me happy. I have to be that happiness. I have to make the choice that I am going to be happy.

Happiness does not mean that bad things do not happen or that troubles will not come my way. Happiness is how I handle these things. If I go thru my troubles and handle them, I can learn from them and increase my happiness.

Troubles that are not handled but “buried alive” will come back to haunt me. They will always be there waiting to come back and trash my day.

Years ago, I was on a bicycle ride from Houston, Tx to Austin, Tx. It was the MS150 and it takes two days. Close to the end of the first day, I gave up and got a ride into the rest spot for the night. I called my wife and asked her to come get me. She said that she had something to do that evening and, if I wanted, she would come out the next morning.

When I got up the next morning, I decided that I would go ahead and try the second leg. I know that if I could not complete the ride, I could get a ride into Austin. That second day was a very nice pleasant ride and I am so glad that I finished the ride.

By completing the ride, I went thru a problem and it is complete. The thought that I had “failed” to complete the ride would not be sitting in the back of my mind.

It is the same way with other problems that we are handed on a daily basis. If we handle them, they are are done. If we bury them, they will continue to come back in one way or another.

So, what does this have to do with change. If I had not completed the ride but had left it undone, like I had done on a lot of things, it would have reinforced my pattern of leaving things unfinished.

But, by completing the ride, I showed myself that I can finish things and this filtered into other areas of my life.

So, be the change that you want to see in the world. If you want to see happiness, be happy.

Life is as good as I allow it to be.
